Mit dem iPhone XS Max bringt Apple sein bislang größtes und teuerstes Smartphone auf den Markt. Mit an Bord sind bessere Kameras und ein schnellerer Chip. Doch lohnt sich ein Kauf? Unser Autor Christoph Fröhlich hat das XXL-Phone und dessen kleinen Bruder bereits ausführlich getestet. Eine alte Schwachstelle wurde nicht behoben.
Es sind die größten iPhones aller Zeiten: Vergangene Woche hat Apple drei neue Smartphones vorgestellt - iPhone XS, iPhone XS Maxund iPhone XR. Anders als es das Namenskürzel vermuten lässt, ist an den Geräten jedoch gar nichts XS:Mit Diagonalen von bis zu 16,5 Zentimetern Länge sprengt Apple die Grenzen der alten iPhone-Welt und verabschiedet sich endgültig vom Steve Jobs’chen Idealdes handtellergroßen Smartphones. Je größer, desto besser - das ist das neue Motto in Cupertino.
Die Premiummodelle iPhone XS und XS Max stehen ab Freitagim Handel. Ich habedie beiden Smartphones bereits ausführlich getestet.
Formfaktor: Das Gleiche in Groß
Das iPhone XS (gesprochen Ten S) ist ein klassisches S-Modell: Es sieht aus wie der Vorgänger, hat aber ein neues Innenleben spendiert bekommen. Zudem ist es in einer weiterenFarbe erhältlich, einem schicken Gold. Die wichtigsten Änderungen im Überblick:
- robusteres und biszwei Meter wasserdichtes (statt 1m) Gehäuse
- flinkeres Face ID
- schnellerer Prozessor
- bessere Kameras mit neuem Sensor
- Dual-SIM
- lautere Stereo-Lautsprecher
- bis zu 512 GB Speicher
- schnelleres LTE - natürlich abhängig vom Provider
Seinen Einstand feiert in diesem Jahr das iPhone XS Max. Der Bildschirm ist auf 6,5 Zoll gewachsen und damit größer als der des Galaxy Note 9. Trotzdem ist das Gehäuse minimal kleiner als diealten Plus-Modelle. Apples Edel-Bolide bringt 208 Gramm auf die Waage, beim hosentaschenfreundlicheren Modell sind es 177. Diesen Unterschied spürt man.
Ansonsten ist das Max identisch zum kleinen Bruder. Das ist nicht selbstverständlich, denn die Plus-Modelle waren immer besser ausgestattet. Ein guter Zug, so kann man die Kaufentscheidungallein vom Bildschirmformat abhängig machen.
Bildschirm: Farbenpracht in der Hosentasche
Die Wahl sollte man mit Bedacht fällen: Der 6,5-Zöller ist allein aufgrund der schieren Größe imposant, doch er ist nichts für jedermann. Auch nicht für mich. Denn das iPhone XS Max passt nicht in meine Hand, es ist so groß wie meine Hand. Und wenn ich mit demDaumenin die obere Ecke will, wird es mitunter akrobatisch.Und ein mehr als 1000 Euro teures Telefon will man wirklich nicht fallen lassen. Das 5,8-Zoll-Modell hat dagegen für mich die perfekte Größe.
Das Glas ist das robusteste überhaupt, behauptet Apple. Die Aussage bezieht sich jedochauf Kratzer und weniger auf Stürze aus der Hosentasche. Wie gut die neueniPhones im Falltest abschneiden, werden in den nächsten Wochen diverse Labortests zeigen. Nach den Erfahrungen mit dem bruchanfälligen iPhone X würde ichaber zu einer Schutzhülle raten.
Die Displays beider Geräte sind technisch gleichwertig: Sie lösen mit 458 ppi (pixel per inch) auf, unterstützen Dolby Vision undHDR10 und haben eine exzellente Farbwiedergabe. Filme und Fotos sind auf dem Mega-Display eine Wucht. Der OLED-Bildschirm ist vermutlichderbesteam Markt.Schade, dass Apple keinenLandscape-Modus wie in den Plus-Modellen eingebaut hat.Vielleicht kann man das per Update nachbessern.

Prozessor: Der Taktgeber der Branche
Ein neuer Prozessor gehört in der Regel nicht zu den Features, die Ottonormalnutzer vom Stuhl haut. Dabei hätte der neue A12 Bionicdas Zeug dazu:Er ist15 Prozent schneller als der Vorgänger, bei bis zu 40 Prozent weniger Verbrauch. Gamer freuen sich über 50 Prozent mehr Grafikperformance, Spiele glänzen mit aufwendigen Licht- und Schatteneffekten.Die Sprünge sind insofern beachtlich, weil sich die gesamte Android-Konkurrenz bis heute an Apples A11-Chip die Zähne ausbeißt. Das schnellste Smartphone wird auch im nächsten Jahr ein iPhone sein.

Doch wozu braucht man so viel Rechenpower? Schließlich konnte ich schon das iPhone X im vergangenen Jahr kaum ausreizen. Der Game Changer ist die verbesserte Neural Engine,eine Art Mini-Chip auf dem A12-Prozessor. Er ist für Prozesse rund ums maschinelle Lernen verantwortlich, aber auch für Funktionen wie die Gesichtsentsperrung Face ID oder Animojis.
Der Chip optimiert viele Aufgaben im Hintergrund, etwa die Porträtbild-Berechnung (dazu später mehr), zudem entsperrt Face ID das Telefon minimal schneller. An der Zuverlässigkeithat sich nichts geändert: In der Regel funktioniert Face ID.Aus sehr schrägem Winkel, wenn das Telefon zu nah oder weiter als eine Armlänge vom Gesicht entfernt ist kann es jedoch haken. Dann muss man die PIN eingeben.
Um das volle Potenzial des Prozessors auszuschöpfen ist Apple auf Entwickler angewiesen, welche die neuen Möglichkeiten für ihre Anwendungen nutzen. Mit iOS 12 können Augmented-Reality-Anwendungen etwa direkt in den Safari-Browser integriert werden. Je mehr Power das iPhone unter der Haube hat, desto schicker sehen die virtuellen Objekte aus.
Noch spielt Augmented Reality eine Nebenrolle. Doch Apple-Chef Tim Cook hält es für eine der wichtigsten Zukunfts-Technologien. Ob der große Durchbruch kommt, wird sich zeigen. Mit dem A12-Chip ist man auf jeden Fall gerüstet.
Kamera: Software statt Sensoren
Das Kamerasystem besteht aus einer Doppelknipse mit je 12 Megapixeln, einem größeren Sensor und einem schnelleren Bildprozessor. Die technischen Daten sind in diesem Jahr aber weniger relevant. Die XS-Generation steht im Zeichen der computergestützten Fotografie. Oder anders ausgedrückt: Die Software rechnet die Bilder schöner, allerdings nicht so plump wie ein Instagram-Filter. Damit geht Apple einen ähnlichen Weg wie Google, Huawei und Samsung, die ebenfalls auf computeroptimierte Fotos setzen.
Die wichtigsten Kamera-Neuerungen des iPhone XS:
- neuer Sensor für bessere Low-Light-Fotos
- Funktion "Intelligentes HDR"
- Stereo-Aufnahme bei Videos
- Individualisierbares Bokeh
Das spannendste Feature heißt"Intelligentes HDR". Damit nimmt die iPhone-Kamera permanent vier Bilder auf, wenn die Kamera-App geöffnet ist, und behält diese im Zwischenspeicher. Dadurch wird exakt der Moment, in dem ich auf den Auslöser drücke, aufgenommen. Zusätzlichschießt die Kamera noch einige Zwischenbilder mit unterschiedlicher Belichtung, um Details genauer herauszuarbeiten. Ähnlich arbeiten etwa auch Googles Pixel-Smartphones. Ein Algorithmus analysiert alle neun Aufnahmen und sucht die jeweils besten Teile heraus. Diese werden anschließendim Bruchteil einer Sekundezu einem Foto kombiniert.

Ein Feature, das einem auch schon in der Android-Welt begegnet ist,hat es nun ebenfalls aufs iPhone geschafft: anpassbares Bokeh. Dadurch kann bei Porträtaufnahmen der Hintergrund (un)schärfer gemacht werden. Das funktioniert Apple-typisch ganz simpel mit einem Schieberegler, der Blenden von f1.4 bis f16 simuliert.
Dank "Intelligentem HDR" entstehen bei Nacht detailreichere Porträtaufnahmen, die sich sehen lassen können. Anbei finden Sie eine Fotostrecke mit Fotos, die mit dem iPhone XS entstanden sind. Alle Bilder wurden aus der Hand im Automatik- oder Porträtmodus geschossen und leicht nachbearbeitet (etwa von Farbe in Schwarz-Weiß).

Batterie: Leider kein Dauerläufer
Ein großes Telefon bedeutet normalerweise viel Akku. Insofern war ichüberrascht, dass das iPhone XS Max nicht viel länger durchhielt als das kleine XS.Apple gibt die durchschnittliche Laufzeit mit einer Stunde mehr an, das scheint realistisch zu sein.Ein Tag ohne Steckdose ist auf jeden Fall drin, wenn man zwei Tage verreist, sollte man aber besser das Ladekabel einstecken.
Auch das XS kommt mit normaler Nutzung über den Tag. Zockeoder streame ich unterwegs, kann es zum Abend hin eng werden. An die Laufzeiteneiniger Spitzen-Androiden kommt Apple auch in diesem Jahr nicht heran. Schade, schließlich steht eine bessere Akkulaufzeit regelmäßig ganz oben bei den meistgewünschten Features.

Toll: Beide iPhones können jetzt schneller kabellos geladen werden und sind kompatibel mit allen Qi-Ladestationen. Unverständlich ist allerdings, dass Apple kein Schnellladenetzteil im Lieferumfang beilegt. Dieses ist separat für 25 Euro erhältlich. Das Integrieren eines solchen Steckers sollte 2018 eigentlich zum Standard gehören.
Dual-SIM: Zwei Nummern in einem Smartphone
Als erstes Apple-Telefon bieten das iPhone XS und XS Max eine Dual-SIM-Funktion. Damit ist es möglich, zwei Telefonnummern auf einem Gerät zu nutzen (etwa dienstlich und privat).
Allerdings gibt es ein iPhone mit zwei herausnehmbaren SIM-Schlittennur in China. Hierzulande ist eine der beiden SIM-Karten eine eSIM, also eine elektronische SIM-Karte. Die wird in Deutschland derzeit nur von Telekom und Vodafone unterstützt, und dass auch nur unter bestimmten Bedingungen. Telefónica (O2) arbeitet nochan der Implementierung.Keine Chance auf eine eSIM dürften in naher ZukunftKunden von Discountern (Aldi Talk, Discotel …) oder Tochterfirmen der Netzbetreiber haben (etwa Congstar).
Zum Verkaufsstart am 21. September steht die Funktion noch nicht zur Verfügung, sie wird "später im Jahr"per Update nachgeliefert.
Doch hätte Apple nicht einfach zwei SIM-Slots wie in China verbauen können? Für die Nutzer wäre das bequemergewesen. Trotzdem ist der Schritt typisch für Apple: Das Unternehmen nutzt seine Marktmacht immer wieder, um die Branche in die von ihm gewünschte Richtung zu schubsen. Mit der Abschaffung der Kopfhörerbuchse wurde der Verkauf von Bluetooth-Kopfhörern angekurbelt, und die ersten Reaktionen der Mobilfunkanbieter zeigen, dass nun endlich auch Bewegung in den eSIM-Markt kommt. Apples Vision ist eine Welt ohne physische SIM-Karten, in der sich Mobilfunkverträge auf Knopfdruck wechseln lassen. Davon würden langfristig auch Android-Nutzer profitieren.
Fazit: Evolution statt Revolution
Das iPhone XS Max macht seinem Namen alle Ehre: Es hat das größte Display, das Apple je verbaut hat. Es bietet bis zu 512 Gigabyte Speicher, dazu den schnellsten Prozessor,eine aufgemotzte Kamera, (demnächst) Dual-SIM und zahlreiche kleine Verbesserungen. Insgesamtist esein hervorragendes Telefon mit einer intuitiven Bedienung und Top-Verarbeitung. Einzig die Batterie ist nicht "Max", hier ist noch Luft nach oben.
Und doch fehlt mir bei den XS-Modellen ein Wow-Feature, eine nette Spielerei, die das iPhone von anderen Telefonen unterscheidet und mich neugierig auf die Zukunft macht. Beim iPhone 4S war das Siri, beim 5S der Fingerabdruckscanner, beim 6S der 3D-Touch-Bildschirm. Die aktuelle Generationhat dagegen kein Alleinstellungsmerkmal, das andere Telefone nicht haben. Alles istetwas besser. Das ist praktisch, aber nicht aufregend.
Dem Erfolg wird das keinen Abbruch tun.Mit den 2018er-Modellen geht Apple die zwei größten Kritikpunkte des Vorgängermodells an:Viele wollten ein größeres Modell,andereein randloses iPhone für unter 1000 Euro, das ab Oktober mit dem iPhone XR erhältlich ist. Branchenkenner schätzen, dass bis Ende des Jahres 75 bis 80 Millionen iPhones verkauft werden - trotz der höheren Preise.Mit Preisen von 1149 Euro (iPhone XS, 64 GB) bis 1649 Euro (iPhone XS Max, 512 GB) sind die neuen Modelle die teuersten Apple-Phones aller Zeiten.
Kaufempfehlung und Alternativen
Meine Meinung: Wer bereits ein iPhone X besitzt, kann sich den Kauf sparen und (mindestens) eine Generation warten. Wer ein XXL-Display möchte, kommt um das Max-Modell nicht herum. Wer von einem älteren iPhone umsteigt, steht vor der Qual der Wahl: Soll es das XS seinoder genügt das 300 Euro günstigere XR?
Für die meisten Menschen dürfte das XR mehr als ausreichend sein. Es wird das neue Standard-iPhone, für 849 Euro bekommt man den schnellen A12-Prozessor und das neue Face-ID-System. Abstriche muss man bei der Kamera (Einzelknipse statt Dual-Cam), beim Bildschirm (LCD statt OLED) und der Verarbeitung (Aluminium statt Edelstahl) machen.
Dennoch hat das XS eine Daseinsberechtigung, immerhin ist es im neuen Randlos-Lineup das "kleinste" Modell und bietet somit Hightech auf kleinerem Raum.
Günstige Android-Alternativen wären das Galaxy S9 (ab 479 Euro) oder das Huawei P20 Pro (ab 600 Euro). Wer es nicht eilig hat, kann auch noch den Oktober abwarten: Google wird am 9. Oktober sein nächstes Pixel-Smartphone vorstellen, Huawei am 16. Oktober das Mate 20.
