If you are looking to add some multicultural vibes to your karaoke performance or are a Filipino speaker, you may be looking for some of the best Filipino karaoke songs to add to your playlist before you head on stage. There are talented Filipino artists across various genres who sing about love, frustration, and every emotion in-between. Filipino songs are perfect for a fun night or day of karaoke with loved ones.
I’ve gathered 15 of the best songs so you don’t have to spend too much time worrying about what tracks to choose and can spend more time practicing, getting ready to perform, and—most importantly—having fun on stage sharing your favorite songs with your friends, family, and anyone else who’s witnessing your set.
Keep reading to learn why you should choose Filipino songs for karaoke, how to prepare, and how to choose the right songs for you.
Why Should You Sing Filipino Songs?
Why should you choose to sing Filipino songs? If Filipino is your native language and the one you are most comfortable singing in, the answer may be obvious. However, there are other reasons to sing tracks by Filipino artists that you should consider:
- You are a native English speaker but like singing in a language other than English. If you are at least an intermediate speaker of Filipino—even as a native English speaker—there’s no reason you can’t challenge yourself and expand your horizons through Filipino songs. I personally love singing songs in languages I am learning, such as German and French, and have even memorized songs in languages I don’t really speak, such as I Aorana, a Tahitian song that I adore. Just make sure you understand and can pronounce the lyrics before performing to avoid any frustration.
- You want to celebrate Filipino culture. Since there are a wide variety of English language Filipino songs to choose from, you can celebrate and honor the Filipino culture through music even if you don’t speak the Filipino language. You still want to practice so you get the sound and lyrics right on stage.
- You are a fan of Filipino artists. Much like with the last point, you can honor your favorite Filipino artists by singing their famous tracks on the karaoke stage. Again, just make sure you know the lyrics whether you choose to sing a song sung in Filipino or English.
- You want to try something new. If you just want to try something new and expand your horizons, you can try out some Filipino songs that you may not have heard before. It may be better to try out English language songs if you don’t speak Filipino. That way you won’t end up singing something with lyrics you can’t pronounce and don’t understand. You still need to practice if you are unfamiliar with the song, though.
Now you understand some of the reasons that it makes sense to choose Filipino songs for your next karaoke gig. Let’s take a look at some ways you can get ready for your karaoke performance so you are prepared to have the best singing experience possible.
Tips for Karaoke Performances
Before you choose your karaoke tracks, it’s important to be prepared for your performance. When I’m unprepared, I always feel nervous about getting on stage and less focused on having fun. Here are some tips to help you get ready to sing that I always follow for my performances:
- Practice your songs in advance. While this isn’t a necessity, making sure you know the twists and turns of your chosen tracks and all of the lyrics can help you be less nervous when it’s time to sing. You can always use your practice time to figure out which songs don’t really work for you.
- Try something new. If you always sing songs by the same one or two artists, it may be time for a change. You can still sing songs you know and enjoy, but adding different ones in that category can add interest and excitement to your performance and give you a challenge.
- Stick to your skill level and vocal range. If you need to sing a song with a limited vocal range, you’re better off picking a simpler song than trying something that goes too high or low on the vocal scale and stresses your vocal chords. You can also try songs by artists outside of your gender if those are what you’re comfortable singing. I find as a female alto with a limited range closer to tenor that I mostly enjoy singing songs by male tenors. I’m fine with it because my voice sounds its best when I’m in my sweet spot.
- Stay hydrated while singing. This tip is important for your health and comfort while singing. I recently forgot to bring my trusty water bottle with me when I went to sing. As a result, I ended up coughing in the middle of my performance and almost lost my voice by the time I was finished singing. Sip on water before, during, and after your performance to keep your throat and mouth hydrated.
- Know you environment. Are you going to be singing with friends or family? Will you be at home with a YouTube connection or using a public karaoke system? Knowing your audience and location will help you know which songs to choose. You don’t want to sing songs with swearing in front of children, and you can’t always sing more obscure songs on a public karaoke system. I recently had the microphone go out on my niece’s machine while I was singing; that’s okay, though, because I was prepared for what to do if my mic went out as I’m used to the machine’s fussiness.
You should follow these tips before every performance for the best results. Now that you know what to do to get ready for your karaoke performance, it’s time to pick out some of the best Filipino karaoke songs for your track list.
